In a major strategic push into one of its fastest-growing markets, OpenAI announced today that all users in India will receive one year of free access to its ChatGPT Go subscription plan. The offer, starting November 4, 2025, coincides with the company’s first-ever DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru.
The offer covers both new sign-ups and existing Indian subscribers, who will automatically receive the 12-month benefit.
ChatGPT Go, normally priced at around ₹399 per month, is a mid-tier subscription that according to OpenAI runs on its latest and most advanced model, GPT-5. The plan offers notable upgrades over the free tier, including higher message limits, expanded image-generation capabilities, longer contextual memory, and the ability to upload more files for analysis.
The move is widely viewed as a strategic response to intensifying competition in India’s fast-growing AI sector. According to reports, Google recently made its AI Pro membership free for students for a year, while Perplexity AI struck a deal with telecom giant Airtel to offer its premium plan free to all customers.
“Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring,” said Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT. “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.”
The initiative forms part of OpenAI’s broader “India-first” approach and aligns with the government’s IndiaAI Mission, aimed at expanding access to artificial-intelligence tools and fostering domestic innovation.
After the one-year free period, the subscription will revert to its standard monthly rate unless cancelled, positioning the initiative as both a market-expansion strategy and a long-term user-conversion opportunity.
